Gateway Chorus

From Workshop to Winners: Gateway Chorus Welcomes 11 New Members

In Edmonton, a group of women embarked on a remarkable journey that transformed them from curious attendees of an open rehearsal to champions and master singers within six months. The Gateway Chorus, known for its exceptional acapella performances, recently welcomed eleven new members who joined through the "Sing Like a Champion" (SLAC) workshop. This six-week educational program provided these women with not only vocal training but also a vibrant, supportive community. Here, we share the inspiring stories of three of these new members: Kerri, Patti, and Deanna.

Kerri: Rediscovering a Passion

Kerri's journey began with a desire to reconnect with a hobby she had enjoyed decades earlier. After two years of researching and observing several choirs on social media, she decided to give Gateway Chorus a try. She attended her first open rehearsal with an open mind, relying on her gut feeling to determine if it was the right fit. "But WOW, did I get it right," Kerri recalls. From the moment she walked in, she felt welcomed in a genuine and non-overwhelming way.

The SLAC workshop, which preceded any formal auditions, was both an educational experience and a brilliant marketing strategy. It empowered potential new members like Kerri by providing a solid foundation in vocal techniques and performance skills. "The chorus members, membership team, management team, directors, and everyone involved create a magnificent, organized, and welcoming environment that is nothing less than astounding," she says. Eight months later, Kerri continues to be amazed by the Gateway Chorus, appreciating the continuous learning and the joy of being part of such an inclusive and fun group. "Fiat Lux, my friends. Let your light shine," she adds, inspired by her alma mater's motto.

Patti: Finding Confidence and Community

Unlike many new members, Patti did not join Gateway Chorus to find a community. At 73, she was looking to improve her singing skills for her ukulele circle and perhaps join a local choir. Joining Gateway was unusual for someone her age, as most chorus members her age had been part of the group for decades. Patti's initial goal was personal improvement, but she quickly found herself embraced by the Gateway community.

The SLAC workshops were a source of joy and camaraderie for Patti, who initially had no idea about the seriousness of the competition aspect of Gateway Chorus. As the contest approached, she felt overwhelmed by the increasing demands of learning songs and choreography. However, the support from fellow chorus members kept her going. "People checked in on me constantly. They told of their own challenges as beginners," she recalls. An online chat group with the other 11 newbies became a significant source of comfort and belonging for Patti. She realized that everyone, regardless of experience, had doubts and faced challenges. "We were all in it together. I didn’t need to be the same as anyone else. I just needed to come as I am and believe that together we could share a truly special success."

Deanna: Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

For Deanna , joining Gateway Chorus was a leap of faith. "Sing Like a Champion...who knew that when I joined this free six-week learn-to-sing program through Gateway Chorus that I would, in fact, become a champion!" she exclaims. Struggling with confidence and identity after raising two children, Deanna found a new sense of purpose and belonging within the chorus.

The support and training provided by the Gateway team were invaluable. "The support we received in expanding our vocal capabilities, performance, confidence, and love through all of life’s struggles has been incredible," she notes. The journey to competition was challenging, with many moments of self-doubt and tears. However, the director's vision and the management team's dedication inspired the new members to push their limits. On the day of the competition, Deanna read a note from her daughter that encapsulated her feelings: "Momma, I am so proud of you for following your dreams." Deanna's experience highlights the transformative power of Gateway Chorus, where unity and mutual support led to incredible achievements.

The Gateway Experience

The stories of Kerri, Patti, and Deanna are just a few examples of the transformative journey experienced by Gateway Chorus's new members. From the initial steps of joining an open rehearsal to becoming integral parts of a champion acapella group, their experiences reflect the welcoming, inclusive, and empowering nature of Gateway Chorus. The chorus not only focuses on musical excellence but also fosters personal growth, community, and lifelong friendships. As these new members can attest, Gateway Chorus truly lives up to its name, providing a gateway to new passions, new skills, and a supportive community that shines brightly together.
