Sheryl Brook
About Sheryl
Sheryl Brook, assumed her position as director of Hearts of Harmony Chorus in January of 2006. Sheryl lives on an acreage near Stettler, AB, but she is happy to make that one hour commute to Red Deer every Monday for choir rehearsals, and often-times drives in for quartet practices, as well. She is one dedicated director!
In French, "Sheryl" means "joyful music" and she brings that joy to every chorus with which she interacts. Sheryl comes from a musical family and she grew up with a heritage of singing and playing music--in the car, at church, at community sing-songs. She comes from a family of barbershoppers: her Dad and Grandfather sang in a quartet and her parents have sung in mixed barbershop quartets. Her Mom, now age 87, commutes an hour weekly to attend Hearts rehearsals. That love of music has flowed through the generations-- every Brook family member has musical gifts.
Sheryl claims that for her, music is a vocation, a calling: "God blessed me with a useful voice and a desire to teach others how to use their voices". That is exactly what Sheryl does, week after week, with our chorus. She believes that music is a comforting form of expression that has measurable health benefits. She further believes that singing in a group provides a great social connection that is both soothing and exciting. Besides her passion for creating joy through singing, Sheryl has a warm, caring personality and a consistently positive leadership style--she brings out the best in chorus members. Her sense of humour makes every practice fun! Sheryl's integrity is above question and her singers rate her as one of the finest women in all of barbershop, the kind of lady that walks the walk, setting a standard of excellence in expertise and personal commitment for others to follow. Wherever she goes, she teaches the craft of barbershop singing and instills the love of this art form in others, and she does it well!
Sheryl has been active in Sweet Adelines since 1979 and has served at chapter, regional and international events. She has been a member of Gateway Chorus, Alberta Gold Show Chorus, LLoydminster Chorus and she is a charter member of River Hills Chorus in Wainwright, AB. Sheryl has traveled to New Zealand, where she coached four different choruses. At the age of 23, Sheryl became part of Region 26 Music Faculty and served in that capacity for 25 years. Sheryl continues to attend regional and international conventions and educational symposiums. She is excited about learning and brings that enthusiasm to chorus members. Over the years, Sheryl has sung bass with six quartets and currently sings with Gilt, one of Hearts' quartets. Additionally, Sheryl is a talented seamstress and often participates in designing and sewing show costumes.
Committed, devoted, talented Sheryl Brook --Hearts of Harmony is blessed with her leadership and love!
